Evolution vs. Creation
A while back now I posted that I was writing this “article”, as I called it. I have since changed my mind about writing a well referenced, well researched piece. During the past fortnight I, somehow, found WikiChristian and GodTube (I wouldn’t bother). That was the last straw. Combined with the mountains of Evolution science and the overwhelming amount evangelism for both Creationism and Evolution, the Internet has become a wasteland riddled with more disinformation than any useful information. I will still address the topic, but … well, there is no point trying to produce a solid irrefutable argument, you just can’t.
Recently research has suggested that artificially intelligent robots demonstrate how creatures developed legs, dinosaurs had feathers, and differences in lice dna can be used to track human evolution. If you have read my Questions you will know I’ve been looking at Evolution vs. Creation. So, these publications are of interest to me. Each of those linked articles are fairly pro-evolution, and, frankly, I think that is OK. If you don’t want to read about evolution, then don’t.
Please if you decide to verify any claims I make here, look beyond WikiPedia. Really!
The Theory of Evolution is the name given to the observable process (i.e. fact) where dna structures mutate between generations, of the species, and that these mutations eventually breed out or become dominant. When a critical point has been reached the collection of mutations is said to have evolved the species, this can result in a new species, or genus, or in the more commonly perceived meaning, results in a fitter, in terms of survival, individuals but not a new species. This process is observable.
Evolution can be observed at two levels: micro and macro. Micro-evolution is generally quick, observable over the time frame of an experiment; micro-evolution generally consists of a species genetically adapting to better suit is environment. Macro-evolution refers to long term changes often resulting in a species split. (This is my interpretation of the two levels, I do not profess to have studied the differences intricately. I do not believe the differences matter, that the process is observable is the conclusion I wish to draw).
So far so good. If we take a strict adherence to Creationism however, we must surmise the Earth is 6000 years old and that man was spontaneously created by God. While I’m think the “God planted history” theory, has some merit, or at least is cute, I don’t think we could ever know for sure. Let’s stick to geological record which suggests the Earth is many millions of years old (billions has different meanings in different counties). Does this contradict the Bible? No! The word “day” used in Genesis 1 more accurately translates as an unspecified period of time. In the first unspecified period of time God did this, and in the second, God did that, and so on… An unspecified period of time can be many millions of years.
Then there is the issue of life. First sticking to plants and animals, evolution of the correct set of amino acids into a single celled organism and then, eventually, into a Gum Tree, or a Trout, or a Cactus, or a Kangaroo had to start somewhere, somehow. The beginning of the universe is a likely answer. But what caused the “Big Bang”? God? If the “Big Bang” of our current understanding did occur, then I don’t see why that could not have been spoken into existence by a deity. Right up to plants and animals I don’t believe science and creation are mutually exclusive. All the theories can be correct. Something (or in this case someone) had to get the ball rolling in such a manner that what we see today was the outcome.
Humans present a snag.
The interpretation could be taken that God formed man specifically, and in His, God’s, image. If this is the case then why can science suggest links in primate / humans dna? On a my philosophical level, if humans evolved from primates, why did God begin a relationship with us? At what point, at what brain functionality level did we become worthy of that? And the list goes on… Do some research if you don’t believe me. I don’t have the answers to these questions. My goal is too find out!
If all of the theories of science are correct (i.e. Evolution, Big Bang, etc…) the processes that have played out must have started somewhere. Nothing in that science stops God from being the instigator. Do your research if you’re interested, you will find out a lot of useful information. You will also find a lot of argument, and a lot of “only one can be correct” attitudes. But for everything except humans, there is no conflict between Evolution and Creation. In many ways, they are complimentary. Humans, however, mess up the perfect model.
I will look into the human issue further. I need to know what I think. Like the rest of this, these ideas are where I’m comfortable. For many people, it could be easier to simply acknowledge that this issue doesn’t really matter. If you are filled with the spirit, you know God; does much else matter?
